Background
The National Center for State Courts (NCSC) launched the Justice for All initiative in partnership with the Self-Represented Litigation Network in response to the 2015 Conference of Chief Justices and Conference of State Court Administrators Resolution 5 on Meaningful Access to Justice for All.
The resolution urged the NCSC and other national organizations to “develop tools and provide assistance to states in achieving the goal of 100 percent access” to justice.
The JFA initiative supports efforts by U.S. states to include all relevant stakeholders in the civil justice community. Since 2016, it has awarded more than $2 million in grants to 14 states to develop and implement comprehensive, statewide action plans with the goal of achieving 100-percent access to effective assistance for civil legal needs.
The initiative is funded by the Public Welfare Foundation, The JPB Foundation, Open Society Foundations and The Kresge Foundation.
As the JFA grantee states conducted assessments, developed comprehensive strategic plans, and began implementing them, the JFA initiative forged ahead with the creation of guidance materials, inventory tools and other resources to support their efforts. And it began to compile lessons from the field based on the findings of the first grantee cohort.
Meanwhile, the JFA initiative had yet to develop a brand and a fully functional, easy-to-navigate website for sharing these materials and lessons with the other 36 states and the U.S. territories that could benefit from them.
Realizing that was a critical next step, the JFA initiative approached Relatable Communications Group for help. Their initial priorities included creating a website, which was a requirement of one of the grants supporting the project. Along with the website, they needed a logo.

THE RESULTS
Relatable Communications Group began by presenting several options for logo designs that incorporated the concept of collaboration and elements of the American flag, since the pledge of allegiance ends with the phrase “justice for all.”
From these, a favorite quickly emerged that earned buy-in from the JFA initiative staff and partners and the leadership of its advisory board.
The next step was to inventory the assets the JFA initiative wanted to share online, devise a navigation structure for the site, draft the website content, and confer with the staff at the NCSC to understand the technical parameters of their web platform so as to design the site to adhere to them.
The result was a NCSC microsite for the JFA initiative that quickly garnered positive reviews from a wide array of stakeholders, including funders, grantees, partners, and advisory board members. Comments included that it was a “terrific new resource” and that it “looks fantastic.”
One reviewer who once held high-level posts at the U.S. Department of Justice and the White House commented, “This is AMAZING! Gorgeous, easy to navigate, and most important filled with fantastic information. Wow. Wow. Wow.”
